In his most recent book, The Revised Edition of “Grain Brain”, David Perlmutter, M.D., quoted two articles discussing that many factors that show up later in life originate before and shortly after birth. The first article was published in American Journal of Psychiatry 169, no.6 (June 2012): 625-32. The title of the article is “Maternal Antibodies to Dietary Antigens and Risk for Nonaffective Psychosis in Offspring.” The article states, “Lifestyle and genes are not the only factors that shape disease risk, and factors and exposures before, during, and after birth can help pre-program much of our adult life. Our study is an illustrative example that a dietary sensitivity before birth could be a catalyst in the development of schizophrenia or similar condition twenty-five years later.”
The second article appeared in “Medical News Today”, May 16, 2012. The title of the article is “Schizophrenia Risk in Kids Associated with Mother’s Gluten Antibodies.” This article stated, “children born to mothers with abnormally high levels of antibodies to wheat protein gluten were 50 percent more likely to develop schizophrenia later in life than children born to mothers with normal levels of gluten antibodies.”
Doesn’t it make sense that every woman who is planning a pregnancy or is pregnant should be tested for gluten antibodies? I have Celiac disease myself and I have treated patient with non-celiac gluten sensitivity and celiac disease for years. As I am sure you are aware, glyphosate (Roundup) activates the gluten receptor which has increased the risk of developing gluten sensitivity in all of us.
If you are planning or are pregnant, don’t put your unborn child at risk. You must know your gluten antibodies.
I encourage everyone to read Grain Brain by David Perlmutter, M.D. Every page contains a wealth of information you can implement in your life to increase the quality and length of your life!
